Police believe body found in Medicine Lake is that of missing kayaker

Police say they think they have recovered the body of a man who went missing early Saturday on Medicine Lake in Plymouth.

Paul Myklebust, 31, was last seen around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, when he and a friend left a party to kayak on the lake. The kayak overturned and the friend made it to shore, according to Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek. It isn't clear why the friend did not call 911.

The next morning, a boater called 911 to report the overturned kayak. Crews recovered a body Monday afternoon in about 10 feet of water, about 100 feet from shore.

Stanek says cold water might have been a factor in the kayaker's death.

"As you can imagine, it's fall here in Minnesota, the water temperature is down to a little less than 50 degrees already," Stanek said. "So it would not take long for hypothermia to set in if you end up in the water."

Stanek said police do not suspect foul play. The Hennepin County medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
