Construction workers rescued in Mpls. high-rise blaze; no injuries

Two construction workers were rescued Thursday morning from a high-rise roof in Minneapolis after welding sparked a smoky fire.

The blaze started on the eighth floor of the historic Ceresota Flour building, 512 2nd Street South. It was put out quickly and no one was injured, said Cherie Penn, spokeswoman for the Minneapolis Fire Department.

"We had some workers that had retreated to the roof for their safety. We left them there and that was intentional while we were making sure that it wasn't spreading any further," she said.

The ten-story building is being converted into senior housing.

It appears some insulation in the building caught fire and spread across the eighth floor. The setback is minor for the project, said Jay Dworsky, one of the building's owners.
