Metropolitan Council chairwoman Sue Haigh will step down after four years leading the regional council.

Haigh will leave the transit, planning and public service agency to concentrate on her work as CEO of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. She is a former attorney for Ramsey County and county commissioner.

Haigh was appointed to the Met Council post as part of Gov. Mark Dayton's new cabinet in January 2011. Her tenure included the planning and construction of the Green Line light rail line and the Red Line rapid transit bus service.

She also led the council through contentious negotiations with the city of Minneapolis for extending the Green Line through the city to Eden Prairie.

Haigh plans to stay with the Met Council until Dayton appoints a successor.
