Betsy Bowen has illustrated more than a dozen books and carved hundreds of woodblocks for prints of birds and woodland creatures.

For her most recent book, "Plant a Pocket of Prairie," the Grand Marais artist says she tried something new this time around, layering woodcut prints of prairie grasses and adding free-hand painting. The book is a primer for prairie preservation written by Twin Cities author Phyllis Root.
