The Hmong New Year was traditionally a harvest celebration, and a time for young people to meet each other.

A Hmong New Year celebration taking place this weekend at RiverCentre in St. Paul was expected to attract up to 20,000 visitors.

"Someone really needs to take initiative of our young generation and keep preserving our language, our culture and our history," said Padee Yang, one of the contestants for Miss Hmong Minnesota.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the Hmong arrival in Minnesota.
