State officials hope to finish the final environmental analysis for the proposed PolyMet copper-nickel mine by early spring. When state and federal regulators approve that analysis, PolyMet can apply for the permits needed to develop a mine.  

But researchers with the University of Minnesota say the answer to whether we can mine safely, without threatening the environment or human health, remains unknown.  

To that end, the university is preparing to ask the Legislature for an additional $6.25 million in January to pursue more mining-related research. 

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Rolf Weberg, who directs the U's Natural Resources Research  in Duluth.  He's working on the details of the funding proposal.
