The small herd of black and white Holsteins certainly looked out of place.

Six wayward dairy cows sauntered down the main drag in Red Wing, a small city tucked along the Mississippi River.

Chief Roger Pohlman says it took three officers to corral the cattle Wednesday night. Pohlman says it wasn't long and police got a call from the cattle owner who noticed his trailer gate was down when he returned to his farm in Hager City, Wisconsin, and that he was missing a few head. He had stopped in Red Wing and figured that's where they made their break for freedom.

The chief says the officers herded the cows into a nearby parking enclosure. He says it's a good thing the cattle were dairy cows, because they're more cooperative than beef cattle.
