At least 8,000 veterans take their own lives each year, according to data from the Veterans Administration.

Rep. Tim Walz has sponsored the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act to address this issue. It's a bipartisan effort, with companion legislation in the Senate sponsored by Sen. John McCain.

Walz joined MPR News' Tom Crann to discuss the bill.
