Blind Roosevelt Graves And Brother - I'll Be Rested

The music on the new compilation "When I Reach That Heavenly Shore: Unearthly Black Gospel 1926-1936," is drawn from the collection of Grammy-award winning producer and engineer Chris King. It includes gospel music and even sermons recorded in the 1920s and '30s. 


One of the songs is "I'll be Rested (When the Roll is Called," recorded by Roosevelt Graves and his brother in 1936. It's considered by some an early example of what would become rock and roll.

A new compilation features gospel music and sermons from the 1920s and '30s.

Today's Morning Edition music is from Roosevelt Graves playing the guitar, with his brother on the tambourine, and their performance of "I'll Be Resting (When the Roll is Called)."  It's one of 42 tracks from a new compilation being released today called "When I Reach That Heavenly Shore: Unearthly Black Gospel 1926-1936." The music is drawn from the collection of Grammy-award winning producer and engineer Chris King. It includes gospel music and even sermons recorded in the 1920s and 30s. This song, recorded in 1936, is considered by some an early example of what would become rock and roll.
