Medina man charged in machete attack on deputy

Authorities have charged a 23-year-old man with attempted murder and assault after he attacked a sheriff's deputy with a machete. A Medina police officer later shot the man.

The Medina Police Department says on Dec. 4, Sgt. Jason Nelson was one of several officers to respond to a report of a suicidal male at a home.

According to the criminal complaint, officers found Donald Nichols in a nearby wooded area, holding a machete and wearing body armor.

After Nichols rushed a deputy and struck him, Nelson shot Nichols.

He has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.

A 14-year veteran of the Medina Police Department, Nelson has been placed on standard paid administrative leave.
