A controversial oil pipeline drew hundreds to St. Paul for the first of five public hearings across the state this week.

Administrative law judge Eric Lipman is taking testimony on the $2.6 billion Sandpiper pipeline, which would cut across northern Minnesota. He'll make a recommendation to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in April on the need for the line.

During the six hours, dozens of people voiced their opinions.

Kevin Pranis with the Great Lakes Region Organizing Committee, which represents union laborers, says about 30 members came to Monday's meeting to support job creation and possible lower fuel prices. He expects a good showing at the four remaining hearings.

Andy Pearson with MN350 says his group will be at each hearing to oppose Enbridge Energy's plan for the pipeline.

Duluth will host a meeting Tuesday afternoon. Crookston, Bemidji and St. Cloud will also host hearings this week.
