Feeling the vibe: Classic sounds, new vision

From an internationally acclaimed pianist to local favorites whose playing is attracting widespread attention, Twin Cities jazz fans are in for an intriguing blend of classic approaches and new compositions.

MPR News editor David Cazares and bassist Chris Bates have their eyes on a handful this week.

The first up to do their duty are guitarists Joel Shapira and Dean Granros, who celebrate a new recording Friday at the Black Dog Cafe in St. Paul. The two musicians, both accomplished soloists, compliment and react to each other.

Also Friday, a storied combination in jazz will be in the spotlight at Jazz Central in Minneapolis, where the B3 Organ Trio unleashes a classic sound. Keyboardist Kevin Gastonguay, who moves easily from traditional jazz to rhythm and blues, does the honors on the Hammond B3 organ. He'll be joined by guitarist Zacc Harris and drummer J.T. Bates.

The show many won't want to miss on Saturday features the Bill Carrothers Trio at Studio Z in St. Paul. A virtuoso pianist who performs throughout the United States and Europe, Carrothers always draws a crowd. He has an exquisite touch.

Another show of note Saturday is the show by Mancrush at the Black Dog, where drummer Lars-Erik Larson, pianist Bryan Nichols, saxophonist Brandon Wozniak and Harris work their way through innovative tunes.

On Monday, the spotlight will be on trumpeter Adam Meckler, whose big band recording "When the Clouds Look Like This," was one of the most talked about albums of 2014, receiving widespread attention. Meckler, who is working on tunes for his quintet, will be joined at Jazz Central by pianist Ted Godbout, drummer Mac Santiago and Chris Bates.
