Tending to the stress of police officers

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says New Hope, Minn., police officers Beau Schoenhard and Joshua Eernisse are out of the hospital after being wounded in a shooting at City Hall earlier this week.

Officers killed the gunman.

Police know all too well how quickly any encounter can turn dangerous.

Several officer-involved shootings have occurred in Minnesota in January alone, and there is greater scrutiny of police tactics following events in Ferguson, Mo., and New York.

Many departments provide psychological training and support to officers to help handle the stress involved in police work. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Dr. Steven Norton, a psychologist based in Rochester, Minn., who is a specialist in police psychology.
