State lawmakers are considering boosting physical education standards for Minnesota students.

The Senate Education Committee is holding a hearing Thursday morning on a bill that would require schools to test for student fitness every year. The bill aims to improve student wellness and long-term health but some say the measure is unnecessary.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Jack Olwell, a physical education teacher in Farmington, Minn., and former president of the Minnesota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
