Big python survives fire that destroyed Cottage Grove home

Firefighters rescued a 4-foot python after a Cottage Grove home caught fire on Monday night.

No people were injured in the fire, which began about 8:30 p.m. on the 8400 block of Hinton Avenue South, according to Chief Rich Redenius. But he said firefighters sweeping the home found a dead dog and a live python, which was returned to the homeowner. A cat is still missing.

The home's garage is a total loss, according to the fire department. There's also significant damage to the main floor of the home.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal, Cottage Grove Police Department and Cottage Grove Fire Department are investigating.
