Student killed in car crash, two others critically injured

A Prior Lake High School freshman was killed in a crash in Credit River Township Thursday night, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

Anna Mary Bird, 14, of Savage, suffered head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a rear passenger in a Ford pickup truck that struck a few trees in the ditch a few miles south of Savage.

The driver, Austin Bradley Knudson, 18, was flown to the Hennepin County Medical Center with critical injuries. He's a junior at Prior Lake High School. The front passenger, Sydney Marie Slone, 15, a freshman, was also taken to HCMC with multiple internal injuries, Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Swedin said.

The crash is under investigation. Swedin said authorities plan to look at cell phone records and check if there is a black box in the vehicle. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor, he added.

"Preliminary investigations are telling us that speed and road conditions most likely were contributing factors," Swedin said.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Savage will hold a memorial service for Bird, a parishioner there, tonight at 6 p.m.
