Can radicalized Americans be rehabilitated?

Counterterrorism experts around the country are trying to figure out if people can be pulled back from the call of terror and returned safely to their communities.

For an answer, many eyes are on Minneapolis and Abdullahi Yusuf.

The 18-year-old man tried to travel to Syria last spring to join ISIS. Authorities intercepted him at the airport and later charged him with conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terror group.

But instead of locking up Yusuf pending trial, a judge released him to a halfway house where he could receive counseling.

MPR News reporter Laura Yuen talked with John Horgan, a professor at University of Massachusetts Lowell and a leading scholar on de-radicalization efforts, about the Yusuf case.
