He was shot once while responding to a burglary call in north Minneapolis just before 5 a.m. on Saturday. He and fellow officers were clearing the call when someone opened fire, hitting Davis.

A fellow officer rushed him to North Memorial Medical Center in a squad car within minutes of the shot.

"They stepped up to the plate, got me to the emergency room as quickly as possible and got me the help I needed," Davis said.

He has been released from the hospital.

Davis called the response to his injury "overwhelming" in the last two days.

"I've gotten numerous texts, emails, calls, visits, people stopping by to see me, well wishes. I've gotten flowers. People have just been overwhelmingly supportive. ... It's nice to know that you're supported by the community members and people are really appreciative of what you do and the sacrifices that we make on a day-to-day basis out there."

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office has charged a Crystal man with burglary in connection with the call that left Davis wounded.

Prosecutors charged Andrew Neal, 43, with breaking into a home armed with a hammer and attacking one of the residents. During a struggle, one of the people in the home stabbed Neal with a pocket knife, authorities said.

According to the criminal complaint, a gun found at the scene is being analyzed. Officials with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office say additional charges could be filed against Neal if tests reveal evidence that he used the gun to wound Davis.
