A bill that would create a lower minimum wage for some tipped workers passed out of a Minnesota House committee this week. 

The current minimum wage of $8 per hour is set to rise with inflation.

The new legislation would keep it from going up for employees who earn at least $12 per hour from wages and tips.  

If the bill is passed by the House, it is likely to face stiff opposition in the DFL-controlled Senate.  

MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Sen. Jeff Hayden, DFL-Minneapolis, who is opposed to the change. He was the chief author of the bill that raised the minimum wage last year.
