Hennepin County violent crime rose slightly in 2014

Incidents of violent crime in Hennepin County increased in 2014, but the number of homicides was among the lowest in over a decade, according to estimated data released by the sheriff's office Wednesday.

The county saw 40 homicides in 2014 compared with 58 in 2013.

Violent crimes — defined as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — totaled 5,141 last year, up by 14 from the previous year.

The sheriff's office identified Plymouth, Richfield and Brooklyn Center as suburbs that had fewer incidents of violent crime in 2014.

However, data from the Brooklyn Park Police Department showed violent crime increased by 25 percent from 2013 to 2014, during which there were 305 incidents, including one homicide.
