B. Todd Jones, the former U.S. attorney for Minnesota, has been tapped by the NFL to be the league's special counsel for conduct.

NFL teams were notified Monday of Jones' appointment, according to a league source.

Jones is currently director of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He announced last week he would resign that post effective March 31.

The NFL was rocked by controversies last season over the conduct of several star players, including Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson, who was indicted in September on a felony charge after using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son.

Peterson later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault.
