Charges filed in St. Patrick's Day chaos in downtown Mpls.

Prosecutors filed the first charges against participants in a fracas on the night of St. Patrick's Day in downtown Minneapolis that police say involved hundreds of young people.

Elijah Morgan-Hamilton, 21, of New Hope, Minn., is charged with second-degree riot in Hennepin County. Prosecutors say Morgan-Hamilton was carrying a knife before he was arrested.

Two young people are also facing possible charges in the juvenile justice system. A 15-year-old boy was arrested for assault and a 15-year-old girl was arrested for suspicion of riot. Another adult case has been referred to the Minneapolis City Attorney's Office because it didn't rise to the level of a felony.

Minneapolis police said that hundreds of young people swarmed downtown on St. Patrick's Day. They fought with one another and blocked traffic near Sixth Street and Nicollet Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. At least six young people were arrested and two were treated for minor injuries.

"At the moment, these are all the cases we have at the county attorney's office," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement. "We have dealt with them as firmly as the law allows and if police are able to bring us more cases after further investigation, we will certainly look at charging them as well."

Morgan-Hamilton was released from jail on Monday evening. His next scheduled court appearance is set for April 21.
