The nation's largest reservoir is holding less water than it ever has. Another victim of the western drought, Lake Mead, sits behind the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas and is at about 40 percent of its capacity.

The Colorado River basin has experienced 14 years of drought, dropping reservoirs along the river's path to historically low levels. The river is an essential driver of the region's agricultural economy and serves Las Vegas and much of Southern California.

This week on Climate Cast, Kerri Miller and Paul Huttner talk with Kumud Acharya of the Desert Research Institute in Nevada.
