Art Hounds: Electric women and a vampire rabbit

This week Art Hounds recommend Victoire, Glasser, and Noveller at the Walker, Indian classical music in Rochester and Bunnicula in Anoka.

Cole Sarar is looking forward to seeing three electric female groups take the stage at the Walker this Saturday. Victoire, Glasser and Noveller are all creating new music — Victoire with an updated chamber group, Glasser with synthesizer and vocals, and Noveller with an electric guitar. Sarar particularly loves how Noveller's music conjures up an alien landscape. She says too often women's voices are just an instrument in new music, not the force behind it.

Laura VanZandt says children were having a blast the day she went to see "Bunnicula" performed at Lyrics Arts in Anoka. Based on the children's book, Bunnicula tells the story of a vampire rabbit who sucks all the color out of the Monroe family's vegetables. VanZandt says the character of Bunnicula is a highlight — it's a huge puppet, with glowing red eyes and retractable fangs.

Padma Wudali urges people in the Rochester area this Saturday morning to check out "Melodies, Rhythms and the Art of Improvisation" at the David Geffen Auditorium on the Mayo Clinic campus. Led by Nirmala Rajasekar and Shri. Thanjavur Murugaboopath'i, the workshop will focus on South Indian carnatic music, with both demonstrations and discussion. Wudali says this is an excellent opportunity to learn from two masters of the form.
