Firefighters push ban on flame-retardant chemicals

Minnesota firefighters are pushing the state to ban certain flame-retardant chemicals.

They say those chemicals contribute to high cancer rates among firefighters.

But efforts to pass a ban have stalled in the Minnesota House.

MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Dr. Susan Shaw, director and founder of the Marine & Environmental Research Institute in Blue Hill, Maine. Shaw, who has studied the connection between flame retardants and cancer, is in town to testify at the Legislature about the issue.
