No budget deal means 9,451 MN workers to get layoff notices

Minnesota is scheduled to send out layoff notices to thousands of state workers Monday because Gov. Mark Dayton and legislators failed to reach a budget deal over the weekend.

Since three budget bills are still outstanding, Minnesota Management and Budget is required to send out layoff notices to 9,451 state workers.

The layoffs won't take effect until July 1 and that's only if Dayton and the Legislature fail to agree on a budget.

The employees work in 17 different departments, agencies and boards. The largest departments affected are the departments of natural resources, employment and economic development, education and agriculture.

Any government shutdown would be more limited than the one in 2011, but taxpayers would still notice. It could mean campground closures, fewer insurance regulators on the job and a thinly-staffed agriculture department.

Dayton vetoed three budget bills forcing a special session.
