The Replacements are over (again), says Westerberg

The Replacements' reunion was short-lived, if Paul Westerberg's concert banter is to be believed.

According to Pitchfork, Westerberg made the announcement during the band's performance in Barcelona, Spain on Friday: He said it would be the last time the band played together.

During the Replacements' reunion tour over the past two months, Paul Westerberg has worn a white t-shirt every night with a letter spray painted onto the front and back, spelling out two different sentences with each side. Fans have pieced together the sentences on the Facebook page Paul's Shirt, according to which the message reads: "I have always loved you. Now I must whore my past."

It could be the final breakup for the iconic Minneapolis band, which first formed in 1979 and broke up in 1991.

In 2012, they reunited and played festivals around the country. Last September, they played their first show in Minnesota in more than 23 years. It was the last event held at St. Paul's Midway Stadium, which will be torn down later this year.

For those in the music industry, Westerberg's announcement didn't come as a surprise. Billboard published an article in May asking: "Are the Replacements done?"

Even if the band has played its last live show, Billboard noted, it's not the end for fans:

The Replacements still have a number of projects in the works including two vinyl box sets out this summer on Rhino Records consisting of the band's Twin\Tone and Sire releases, a possible documentary, a biography and more. The band also performed several new songs on this latest tour including "Whole Foods Blues" and "Watering Can," which Paul performed solo.
