Police investigate child's death in Brooklyn Park pool

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl at an apartment complex swimming pool.

Family members told police that the toddler went missing about 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Windsor Gates apartments, where they were unable to find her.

Brooklyn Park Deputy Chief Mark Bruley said the child was last seen with a group of other children, ages 7 to 15, near the pool.

Police and fire department personnel conducted an extensive search of the area and canvassed the apartments before finding the child's body in the deep end of the pool.

Bruley said the pool was surrounded by a 6-foot fence. He said a caretaker inspects the pool and locks it every night at sundown, but the murky water probably blocked his view.

The girl likely was in the water several hours before officers found her body, Bruley said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
