Mother, child in stroller shot in Minneapolis

A mother in her 20s and her 15-month-old child were shoot Thursday afternoon in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis.

Police Spokesman John Elder said the woman was pushing the child in a stroller on Park Avenue, just south of Franklin Avenue, when they were hit by gunfire. Both are in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Elder said it appears they weren't the intended targets of the shots.

"That is nothing other than heartbreaking," Elder said. "And, really, what it boils down to is that you should be able to walk down the street with your child in a stroller and not have fear of being shot."

Minneapolis Chief Janeé Harteau visited the victims and took to Twitter, stressing that "people need to put their guns down." No arrests have been made.
