Hamline hosts Paralympics athletes for championship

Minnesota is hosting the U.S. Paralympics Track and Field National Championship for the first time this weekend.

Over 200 athletes are set to participate in the event at Hamline University in St. Paul. In addition to 37 states that will be represented, Australia, Great Britain, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago will have athletes at the meet.

Event director Cathy Sellers says the competition can change people's perspectives on athletes with disabilities.

"These are world class athletes," said Sellers. "Most of them are known around the world. Unfortunately they're just not known as much in the United States."

Runners include 11-time medalist Tatyana McFadden who has won several marathons with a spinal cord injury.
