Target removes Confederate costume from website

In the wake of the shooting deaths of nine black church members in South Carolina, Target has announced that it has stopped selling a Confederate costume on its website.

In taking the action, Target is joining other nationwide retailers who have stopped selling items with the Confederate flag.

The retail giant said it didn't want to offend people by selling the adult Civil War costume.

"Our intention is never to offend," Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, wrote in an email. "We did identify one historical costume on our website. As we all recognize the great sensitivity around this, we have removed that one item."

Walmart, Amazon and other retailers have removed products with Confederate flags from their websites since the attack on the South Carolina church.

Arkansas-based Walmart has even vowed to pull all Confederate-themed items from its store shelves and websites.

Target officials say the company did not carry Confederate flags or decor, just the uniform costume.
