The Minneapolis City Council has voted to designate some parts of Dinkytown as a historic district.

The vote came Friday night and the designation will protect parts of the neighborhood around the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus from future development.

The designation applies to the heart of Dinkytown, which includes the Loring Pasta Bar and the Varsity Theater.

Preservationists have been pushing for the historic designation for months. They've argued that the area has an important architectural and political history, from 1930s storefronts to Vietnam War-era protests.

The details of the designation haven't been hammered out yet.
