The ongoing squabble over a new soccer stadium for the Twin Cities has both supporters and critics digging in their heels.

After lawmakers declined to offer tax breaks for a Minneapolis stadium during the legislative session this spring, the facility's future — and that of major league soccer in the cities — seemed uncertain.

But Minnesota United team owner Bill McGuire and local officials who see promise in the plan are not giving up. Last month, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman touted his city as an alternative to Minneapolis and invited a Major League Soccer executive to look at an empty parcel of land at Snelling Avenue and Interstate 94.

Then, just last week, Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin brought attention back to Minneapolis, presenting a proposal that could allow the city to host the stadium after all.

McLaughlin joined MPR News host Tom Weber to discuss the stadium.
