Shipping lock at Sault Ste. Marie closed for repairs

Officials say one of the navigational locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., is being shut down because of mechanical problems.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Detroit District office says the MacArthur Lock has a set of gates that isn't closing property.

Staffers at the Soo Locks complex will remove water from the lock to determine what's causing the problem. Then they'll decide how to fix it.

The Soo Locks raise and lower ships traveling between Lake Superior and Lake Huron through the St. Marys River. It's a crucial link for vessels hauling iron ore, coal and other bulk cargo.

Corps officials say they expect the MacArthur Lock to be closed for at least 10 days. In the meantime, vessels will be rerouted through the nearby Poe Lock. Delays are expected.
