Seventy years ago — on Aug. 6, 1945 — the United States military dropped an atomic bomb on Japan's Hiroshima. That bombing and one three days later over the city of Nagasaki brought an end to World War II. Nuclear weapons have not been used since.

A documentary, which was originally broadcast in 1985, explores the history of the development of the bomb and the consequences of using it.

"Hiroshima Countdown" was produced by Andrew Phillips of the Investigations Radio Project with Studs Terkel. It was made available by the non-partisan Center for Defense Information.
