This week the Art Hounds recommend an art exhibition inspired by women's contributions to hip hop, a dance concert that looks at a generation's fascination with The Carpenters, and a musical inspired by a tragic event in Chicago.

Make-up artist Julie Swenson recommends folks check out "Space and Time," an exhibition that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the B-Girl-Be hip hop festival. The artwork includes embroidered rap lyrics and paintings that combine Japanese animation, graffiti and comics. The show runs through August 22 at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis.

Heidi Jedlicka Halvarson, company member of Savage Umbrella, is looking forward to seeing Arena Dances remount of "I Hate Myself — Will You Please Love Me?" Inspired by the '70s music duo The Carpenters, the concert takes a sly look at our fascination with famous families, and their strange, dysfunctional ways. Performances run through August 16 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.

Writer Lucie Amundsen loves creative non-fiction, and how it uses dramatic flair to get people interested in history. So she's excited to see "Eastland," a musical about a 1915 boating accident that killed 844 people. She says it's fitting the show is coming to Duluth, since the port town knows all about the beauty and brutality of the water. Performances run through August 22 at Teatro Zuccone in Duluth.
