Sheriff: Beltrami deputy hit in high-speed chase improving

The Beltrami County deputy who was run over during a high speed chase Friday is in stable condition, authorities said.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Department received calls for back up from the Red Lake Tribal Police and the FBI. A man was driving south off the Red Lake Reservation at high speed.

"He'd assaulted a woman with a sword," Beltrami Sheriff Phil Hodapp said. "And he was armed with a pistol."

After a half-hour high speed chase and two failed deployments of a tire deflation device, the 20-year-old driver was finally stopped.

That's when Hodapp said Deputy David Hart got out of his squad car and approached the suspect on foot.

"The suspect suddenly reversed his car," Hodapp said, "and ran over Dave."

The man was arrested without further incident and Hart was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn. Hodapp said Hart is in stable condition, but couldn't comment on the extent of his injuries.

The suspect also complained of injuries, and was brought to Sanford Emergency Department in Bemidji where he was medically cleared and released into custody at the Clearwater County Jail.

The Red Lake Tribal Police did not return calls for comment on the case.
