Don't be surprised when your doctor recommends an HIV test during an upcoming wellness visit.

Providers and health organizations — including Mayo Clinic and HealthPartners — are encouraging all adults to be tested for the virus at least once.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has encouraged HIV testing since 2006, the Affordable Care Act now lists the test as an essential preventative service.
