MSP baggage area cleared after bag tested positive for explosives

An unattended bag at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport tested positive for explosives early Thursday, but was later found to be non-threatening.

Airport workers found an unattended bag at Carousel 12 of Terminal 1 shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday, according to MSP spokesperson Melissa Scovronski. The bag initially tested positive for explosives, she said.

Airport officials temporarily closed the baggage claim road and called in the Bloomington Police Department's bomb squad. Police discovered that the bag did not pose a threat.

Scovronski said the test for explosives can sometimes pick up residue from firearms or fireworks. She said the airport had a similar situation about two weekends ago.

No information was immediately available about the bag's owner.
