This week, the Art Hounds give us their recommendations for getting your fill of art at the Minnesota State Fair.

Storyteller Loren Niemi recommends two classics with folkloric history: butter carving and seed art. He says the annual sculpting of the dairy princesses in 90 pounds of butter goes back to the turn of the century when life-sized carvings of cows were made to promote the dairy industry. The seed art exhibition, Niemi says, is the one of the most political displays at the Fair, with images of both patriotism and satire.

Musician Liz Wilkinson loves to check out the local music at the fair, and this year she's particularly excited to see Reina del Cid, Davina and the Vagabonds and the lesser known gem "i like you."

Stand-up comic Jenn Schaal recommends you grab your corn dogs and mini-donuts and head straight to the 4-H building to check out the 4-H musical. She likens it to Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman," filled with awkward earnestness and big heart. The angst! The costumes!
