40 years ago: 'Get Down Tonight' hits No. 1

Today's Morning Edition music segment features "Get Down Tonight" by KC and the Sunshine Band. The tune enjoyed the No. 1 spot on Billboard's pop chart 40 years ago.

The distinctive introduction in "Get Down Tonight" features a guitar recorded at double speed. The song became the first of five No. 1 hits for KC and the Sunshine Band, making them one of the more successful groups of the disco era.

The band's name came from founder Harry Wayne Casey, who was from the "Sunshine State" of Florida.
