Former Mpls. council member badly hurt in accident

Minneapolis police are investigating an accident in which a school bus struck and injured a former City Council member.

A spokesperson for Hennepin County Medical Center said Sandra Colvin Roy is in critical condition.

The bus hit Colvin Roy as she crossed a street near Lake Nokomis Tuesday afternoon.

Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder says no one on the bus was injured, and there is no indication that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Her neighbor Carol Kummer said Colvin Roy suffered a head injury that required surgery.

Kummer said there's been an outpouring of support.

"She had friends that she'd made through her work on the City Council that live across the country," Kummer said, "and they're calling to find out what happened."

Colvin Roy was first elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 1997. She served through 2013 and decided not to seek reelection.
