Minneapolis teen who killed toddler will stand trial as adult

A Minneapolis teenager who beat his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter to death in June will stand trial as an adult, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's office.

Cody Samuel Feran-Baum, 18, agreed in Hennepin County District Court on Tuesday to give up efforts to keep the case in juvenile court as he faces second-degree murder charges in the death of 2-year-old Sophia O'Neill.

Feran-Baum was 17 years old when he admitted to beating the girl in June, but has since turned 18. He wasn't the child's father, but was the boyfriend of her 20-year-old mother. The three had been living at his grandmother's house in Minneapolis.

Feran-Baum told investigators that he was watching the girl on June 10 while her mother was away. Feran-Baum told investigators that the girl wouldn't stop crying so he kicked her twice in the back, put her on the floor and stomped on her.

Doctors treating the girl reported that she had damages to her kidney, pancreas and liver, as well as rib fractures, a collapsed lung and other injuries, according to the original juvenile charges against Feran-Baum. She died later the same day.

Adult charges against Feran-Baum are expected to be filed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office soon.
