We walk in beauty: Finding Minnesota's best fall color

Oberg Lake
September 2014 saw the hills over Lake Superior near Tofte, Minn., explode into color. What was green just a week before became a sea of red, yellow and orange. At least one foliage expert is calling for another impressive show this year.

Weather conditions seem to be aligning to make colors burn bright this fall in Minnesota. The state Department of Natural Resources has started updating its seasonal foliage finder map, meaning the color show isn't far behind.

There are no drought conditions anywhere in Minnesota, and DNR officials say showers the last few weeks have improved conditions for a lovely fall. Warm sunny days and cool night with no frost make for a great season.

Peak fall color usually begins along the Canadian border in mid- to late-September and ends in southern Minnesota in early to mid-October, the DNR says. The Twin Cities usually sees peak color in late September to mid-October.

Minnesota is on track for great fall color due to plentiful rainfall in recent weeks, according to a foliage expert with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. As of Sept. 1, there was no drought in Minnesota and the only area considered abnormally dry was a pocket along the North Shore near Lake Superior, the U.S. Drought Monitor determined. The DNR's Fall Color Finder is now online. It's proved useful for tracking color around the state and is worth checking out. To get you in the mood to get outdoors in the coming weeks, the DNR on Thursday posted this video of Minnesota State Parks from fall 2012.
