The Minneapolis Police Department on Tuesday launched its own website. It's a move officials hope will foster two-way communication between police and the community.

The idea was recommended by the federal government's Office of Justice Programs, Police Chief Janee Harteau said, adding she requested an audit by the agency last year to help the department improve its relationship with the public.

Visitors to the site can find updates on cold cases, as well as statements and reactions from the department on current incidents.

"Not only do you push the information out, but there's an ability for people to share information, share complaints, share compliments, ask questions — to really interact and engage with the department," Harteau said.

The website contains information on how to submit compliments or complaints to the department. It will also be used to post responses to fast breaking events.

"Things go viral really quickly," she said. "This is a way for us to respond immediately to certain events that occur."
