Columbia Heights man, 76, shot during home invasion

Police say a 76-year-old Columbia Heights man was shot multiple times during a home invasion on Tuesday night.

Anoka County Sheriff spokesman Paul Sommer says that police were called to a home on the 5000 block of Johnson Street NE about 9:30 p.m. They found the homeowner on his kitchen floor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, but his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say the victim reported coming home and walking into his house from the attached garage. The suspect apparently followed him in through the still-open garage door, followed the victim through the service door and immediately opened fire, without making any demands. The robber took the victim's wallet and fled.

The case is under investigation.
