The driver has been fully cooperative and has not been arrested, said Police Spokesperson Steve Linders. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the incident, he added.

Steve Daly, store manager of nearby Cooper's Foods, said the woman was hit at about 6:30 a.m., shortly after his store opened.

Daly said the victim appeared to be an elderly woman who was crossing the busy street accompanied by an older man. Daly said traffic is generally pretty heavy at the intersection at that time of morning.

Police closed off access to the intersection for about three hours following the incident. The body was loaded into a hearse and taken away shortly after 9 a.m.
