Carbon monoxide blamed for girl's death on Lake Minnetonka

Carbon monoxide poisoning is being blamed for the death of a 7-year-old girl on Lake Minnetonka Sunday.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says authorities received a call shortly before 5 p.m. about an unresponsive girl at Wayzata Bay.

Sophia Baechler was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she died.

Sophia was a second grader at Concord Elementary School in Edina. Her parents informed school staff about the cause of death Monday morning.

The school is making counselors and social workers available to the child's classmates.

In 2013, a four-year-old Maple Grove girl was hospitalized after inhaling a near-lethal amount of carbon monoxide while riding in the back of an open-air boat.
