Art Hounds: Double-header at Icehouse and an Instameet

This week on Art Hounds we check out a double-header at Icehouse, partake of an "Instameet" in Albert Lea and visit a show of abstract paintings in Duluth.

Writer Juliet Patterson is excited to see two of her favorite new bands perform back-to-back at Icehouse in Minneapolis this Friday night. The Meadows (made up of Pete Linman, Wendy Lewis and Jeff Waryan) describe themselves as "dark narrative folkpunk" while Reina del Cid has been compared to Regina Spektor. Patterson is looking forward to seeing Reina's bright young band open up for the "old pros" of The Meadows.

Photographer Rachel Ewell will be heading to Albert Lea this Saturday for a day-long "Instameet," an event for amateur photographers to take pics and share them via Instagram. This weekend's Instameet is hosted by the Minnesota Preservation Alliance, and will feature tours of eight historic buildings. Ewell says such gatherings are a great way to make new friends and develop your photography skills while exploring places you might never get to see otherwise.

Painter Patricia Canelake suggests you stop by Lizzards Art Gallery in downtown Duluth to take a look at "Surprised by Joy," an exhibit of oil paintings by Terry Millikan. Canelake says the work is bright and fun, but grounded in a deep knowledge of art history. Many of the paintings are homages to famous abstract painters, but Canelake says Millikan's style is all her own. Up through November 7.
