Funeral set for sheriff's deputy killed in line of duty

A funeral will be held Friday for the central Minnesota sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty over the weekend.

Authorities say Aitkin County Sheriff's Investigator Steven Sandberg was shot with his own weapon as he struggled with a suspect he was monitoring at St. Cloud Hospital early Sunday.

Visitation for Sandberg is Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Aitkin United Methodist Church.

His funeral is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Aitkin High School, with burial to follow in nearby Bennettville.

The suspect died after hospital security personnel subdued him with a stun gun. Danny Leroy Hammond had been facing charges of kidnapping and threatening his wife but was not under arrest while in the hospital.

St. Cloud Hospital says it's reviewing the incident internally and is cooperating with the law enforcement investigation.
